Enemy You Stories Never Told (2004)

CCCP 102

Enemy You first debuted on the four-way split dubbed Four On The Floor alongside bands Screeching Weasel, Teen Idols, and Moral Crux. A fine start among fine company that set the stage for their full length on Lookout! Records: Where No One Knows My Name. Then came shows, tours, and even a track on the illustrious Short Music For Short People compilation. The band spent a good long time working on their next proper full length, Stories Never Told, and that’s what we have here. After hearing bits of the unfinished record we at Red Scare were anxious to work with the band, and ta-da, here we are! You’d be surprised as to what you can accomplish with a little sweet talk and a lot of Wild Turkey.

Enemy You has toured the West Coast multiple times and played shows with all the punk rock heavies: NOFX, Bad Religion, Bouncing Souls, Lagwagon, etc. And in support of Stories they will continue to play frequently on the Left Coast as well as embark on their first big national tour of the States. With a new record to tout and a slew of shows to play, nothing can hold back these Bay Area dynamos! Except perhaps some more Wild Turkey…

Teenage Bottlerocket Total (2005)

CCCP 103

The first proper full-length album from Wyoming’s favorite sons! In light of the dismal musical climate (shaggy haircuts, make-up, trite screamo vocals, etc), it would seem that isolation has only strengthened this band’s songwriting. Rather than waste their time with low-cut jeans, these young upstarts spend their efforts writing infectious punk songs, and they delivered the best Ramones-core record of the new millennium. I’m not exaggerating, folks. Read on!

Shortly after Teenage Bottlerocket agreed to work with Red Scare, they added a second guitarist. Oh, not just ANY guitarist, it was Kody from Lookout’s legendary pop punk trio the Lillingtons. I feel like the luckiest guy this side of the Cowboy State! Better yet, Kody went on to write and sing half the songs on Total, making this debut bound for success. The only possible way we could improve on this wondrous kismet is if Joey and Dee Dee rose from the grave to make guest appearances. But we figured that we should leave SOMETHING for the next record…

The Lillingtons The Backchannel Broadcast (2001)

CCCP 106

The Lillingtons came from the unlikely cowtown of Newcastle, Wyoming. There’s no Second Avenue in Newcastle, and no Chicken Vindaloo either. But it’s the kind of place where men from space land their flying saucers and perform painful experiments on toothless farmers and Ramones-obsessed teenagers. Escaping the town of Newcastle by way of music has made the Lillingtons “the greatest band I’ve heard since the Queers” as said by Ben Weasel, and The Backchannel Broadcast makes that evident to everyone. Originally released on Lookout!/Panic Button in 2001, now re-issued by Red Scare.

Bullets To Broadway Drink Positive (2005)

CCCP 107

Drink Positive is the 8-song debut CDEP (Produced by Roger from Less Than Jake) from the hard-touring punk rock upstarts known as Bullets To Broadway. Formed out of the ashes of two now-defunct bands (Fat Wreck’s Teen Idols and No Idea’s Army Of Ponch); these kids have already played shows with NOFX, Bad Religion, and Suicide Machines. The Methadones 21st Century Power Pop Riot (2006)

CCCP 108

Since forming five years ago, the hard-touring kings of Chicago pop-punk are finally selling out shows, and they finally have a new record to follow-up their breakout LP, 2004’s Not Economically Viable. Just like the Chicago Bears, these Midwesterners are back, and with 12 new punk-a-fied hits for their growing fanbase. There’s everything from Clash-esque ska to balls-out rock reminiscent of Guns N’ Roses. CCCP 110

They’re back and with the original lineup! Straight outta The Blasting Room, The Lillingtons have returned with an album chock full catchy hits. It’s classic Lillingtons: the Red Menace, alien invasions, double agent spies, and every other kinda B-movie hijinx you can think of. Sundowner Four One Five Two (2007)

CCCP 112

Chris McCaughan (Singer/Guitarist of The Lawrence Arms on Fat Wreck Chords) has been playing solo shows at clubs and coffee shops for the past few years. He culled together the best stuff, assembled a group friends to help fill out the songs, and dubbed the project Sundowner. Their debut record, Four One Five Two, comes as a great relief to the superfans and MySpace weirdos that have been begging for this material to be made available on record. That’s where we come in! Here’s the cherry on top: Four One Five Two offers some re-worked versions of hits originally recorded by The Lawrence Arms; like the fan favorite “100 Resolutions”. And when our man Chris isn’t on tour with The Lawrence Arms hyping the band, he’ll be doing his own solo tour in support of the record.

For the release of Make Sound The Copyrights have a new label, a new studio, and have further perfected their craft. Their last LP, Mutiny Pop, made everyone’s “Best Of” list and got them on tours with bands like Chixdiggit, Groovie Ghoulies, The Ergs, and more. The Methadones This Won’t Hurt… (2007)

CCCP 114

Chicago’s Methadones got our attention with their last proper album, Not Economically Viable, which came out on Thick Records in 2004. It was their breakthrough, and anyone who overlooked that LP missed out on the BEST pop punk record of 2004. We then hooked up to release a hilarious party album (21st Century Power Pop Riot) that featured The Methadones with a number of guest vocalists covering Cheap Trick, Costello, and more. Now it’s back to business, and the ‘Dones have a new batch of originals that pick up where they left off with the great Not Economically Viable. It’s called This Won’t Hurt… and they recorded it at the famed Atlas Studios in Chi-Town. The same guys that brought you stuff from The Lawrence Arms and Alkaline Trio have captured The Methadones in all their glory and have them sounding better than ever. Fronted by the venerable Dan Vapid, they have yet another album full of undeniable hits and on top of all this, they have two tours booked in the near future…hide your beer and chicken wings!

Cobra Skulls Sitting Army (2007)

CCCP 115

Reno’s Cobra Skulls play a brand of leftist punk that blends crust, folk, rockabilly, skate-punk, and who knows what else. Some say they sound like The Clash, some say The Living End, some say Against Me!. After garnering quite a buzz in neighboring towns, we at Red Scare saw their live show and were immediately sold on ‘em. Because of their varied influences, Cobra Skulls deliver a record so dynamic that everyone’s ears will perk up. And just when you think they’ve ran outta tricks, they bust out with songs in Spanish…aye carumba! Their parents are gonna be especially proud because these guys are quitting their jobs and planning on touring for the rest of 2007. Can you believe we made it to the end without making any jokes about Reno?

La Plebe ¡Hasta La Muerte! (2007)

CCCP 116

La Plebe are a special group, and probably San Francisco’s biggest punk band at the moment. Aside from playing countless packed shows, they are responsible for founding an especially promising Latino punk rock scene that has recently arisen from SF’s Mission District. But La Plebe make it a point not to be pigeonholed as they want to be known primarily for their rambunctious songs. And these guys are popular for a reason: they play the hits, Señor! So after a local label released 3 EPs, we brought them aboard in an effort to share this brilliant bilingual punk band with the rest of the punk/ska world. They then went into Motor Studios and cranked out a record under the direction of producer Bill Gould (founding member of Faith No More, Brujeria), and the result is their breakthrough LP, ¡Hasta La Muerte!. They tell me that means “’Til Death!”, but it could mean “Our Label Sucks!” for all I know…These guys have an undeniable live show, so look for them in your town as they tour the world!

Teenage Bottlerocket Warning Device (2008)

CCCP 118

Teenage Bottlerocket has delivered the goods. They’ve got a buncha new songs on an album called Warning Device that has been masterfully crafted at the Blasting Room (Descendents, Rise Against, Lagwagon, etc.). Their last record, the breakout release Total, got them on compilations with Fat Wreck Chords and Hopeless Records; not to mention national tours with bands like Epoxies and Groovie Ghoulies. The chords are power, the punk is pop, and they don’t give a rip about your haircuts because they’re far too busy ripping through their setlist. Warning Device will make you pogo ’til your leather jacket falls to pieces, so get on board or get burned by the Rocket!

Cobra Skulls Never Be A Machine (2008)

CCCP 121

After Cobra Skulls kicked the door down with their debut LP they were picked by Alternative Press as a “Band to Watch” and went on to tour with bands like Against Me!, The Loved Ones, Mad Caddies, and more. With a growing buzz and hungry fans, the band knew they had to feed the snakes with something between albums, and here it is: three new songs of politically-charged punk rock belted out as though they’ve seen the future and are warning us about the end of the world. We’re doomed, Scoob!

Druglords of the Avenues Sing Songs (2008)

CCCP 122

Fronted by Johnny Peebucks of the Swingin’ Utters, this debut full length is a dynamic blast of traditional punk rock from the streets of San Francisco! These 13 songs are raw and raucous overall, but listeners will also catch pearls of folk, pub rock, and more. Unlike their contemporaries who rely on charged hair and on-stage posturing, Druglords focus on their craft and deliver superb melodies over truly aggressive chords. For best results, mix with an Irish Whiskey or a Draught!

Cobra Skulls American Rubicon (2009)

CCCP 127

There’ll be no sophomore slump from these seditious serpents. Not a chance. Cobra Skulls have sharpened their fangs by playing hundreds of shows all over the globe and their 2nd full length, American Rubicon, is the follow-up that the underground has been waiting for. 17 venomous tracks recorded in snowy Chicago during the winter of ’09 by Matt Allison at Atlas Studios (Alkaline Trio, Less Than Jake, etc). This new record is more dynamic than anything you’ve heard from Cobra Skulls and these bilingual punks offer up songs about the apocalypse, young love, punk scene politics, perpetual war, and even their own sordid upbringing. This is the kind of music that god-hating South American revolutionaries tune up their hot rods and comb their hair to. How do we know? Because they’re in the band!

The Sidekicks Weight Of Air (2009)

CCCP 128

This latest effort from The Sidekicks is a real product of their environment and the vibrant underground music scene around them in Northern Ohio. Less raw and punky, Weight Of Air is a surprisingly sophisticated release from the young quartet, and this time they draw more from Midwestern indie-punk influences like the Replacements, the Weakerthans, and Promise Ring. Lots of instrumentation, mature songwriting, youthful energy, and some of the catchiest hooks we’ve heard from any Red Scare band add up to an impressive follow-up. They may not be old enough to gamble and drink yet, but you can expect a lot more great music and great shows from these fresh-faced Clevelanders.

Various Artists Untitled 21: A Juvenile Tribute To Swingin’ Utters (2010)

CCCP 135

Swingin’ Utters had been a band for just over 21 years when we first began putting this tribute together for the beloved streetpunk heroes. Before we knew it, bands were coming out of the woodwork with their offerings: established acts like Dropkick Murphys and Fucked Up, as well as upstarts like Cobra Skulls and Off With Their Heads. Bands of all stripes from different sub-scenes and from far-off places like Israel and Sweden. The Utters may have started out as an earnest, working-class punk band from San Francisco, but their music has reached audiences far and wide. This collection is a testament to just how relevant and influential Swingin’ Utters are to all of us, and most importantly, this is the punk scene’s way of saying thanks.

Vultures United Savages (2010)

CCCP 137

SoCal’s Vultures United were first described to us as the “most terrifying band around”, but as it turns out, they’re pretty nice guys! Whew, right? There’s nothing well-adjusted about their music though, and they draw their sound from nearby predecessors such as Black Flag and Swing Kids; while younger listeners will probably liken them to modern-day bands like Gallows, Hot Snakes, and The Bronx. One listen to their Red Scare debut, Savages, will reveal to the world that Vultures United and their brand of dark, deviant hardcore cannot be categorized. It will, however, give you nightmares. Enjoy.

The Menzingers Chamberlain Waits (2010)

CCCP 139

After releasing an especially lauded EP and touring much of 2009, The Menzingers have been dubbed a “Band You Need To Know” in 2010 by Alternative Press and now they have a brand new full length proving why. Chamberlain Waits may very well be the most important record released so far by Red Scare and on it The Menzingers combine many of the genre’s styles (punk, hardcore, folk) to make for an undeniably infectious hybrid of hits. Produced by Matt Allison at Atlas Studios (Alkaline Trio, Less Than Jake, Lawrence Arms), this new album is destined for great, great things.

The Brokedowns Species Bender (2010)

CCCP 140

The Brokedowns are a humble and oft-dormant quartet from right outside Chicago that somehow stole the punk rock spotlight in the last year. (And that’s where opportunist jackoffs like us come in, wink wink) They toured with Dillinger Four, landed on the cover of Razorcake Magazine, and released a killer 7″ on No Idea Records. Their new 13-song full length, Species Bender, is proof of all the great progress they’ve made as a band and will firmly plant ’em alongside the genre’s best. We’re talking about a truly rockin’ record, and The Brokedowns are one of the few bands still playing traditional punk rock and playing it well. On top of all that, they package it with hilarious, biting lyrics: songs that reference the Octo-Mom, wizards, Jersey Shore, Kid Rock, etc. That’s what I call a good fuckin’ time.

Tracklist:

01. Wizard Symptoms

The Reaganomics Lower The Bar (2011)

CCCP 142

A couple years ago the members of the beloved metal-punk trio, Ryan’s Hope (Punknews Records/Epitaph), wanted to fuck off and play some fun, unhinged pop-punk songs. They formed The Reaganomics and immediately started playing shows around the Midwest with bands like Teenage Bottlerocket, Dead To Me, Off With Their Heads, etc. Let’s just say that if “Comedic Punk” was a real sub-genre, that’s where they’d belong with their songs about living with bears and partying with RoboCop. Hey, we never that this debut album was gonna prepare you for your PhD dissertation, but Lower The Bar will be the perfect soundtrack to the after party.

Tracklist:

01. Don’t Worry, We’ll Play First

The Heat Tape Raccoon Valley Recordings (2011)

CCCP 143

The Heat Tape are straight outta Makanda, Illinois (pop. 419) and their debut record, Raccoon Valley Recordings, takes it’s name from the very trailer park where the band conducts all their business. You heard right: this group was formed in a trailer park in Southern Illinois (not far from where they host the annual Gathering of the Jugggalos) and the band is made up entirely of trailer park denizens. Sadly, The Heat Tape are NOT a buncha hilljacks making music inspired by zoophilia and Funyuns. It’s actually long-time Red Scare comrade Brett Hunter (The Copyrights, Dear Landlord) making feverishly infectious lo-fi ditties with his friends in his mobile home. It reminds us of The Thermals, Jay Reatard, The Marked Men…if that helps. We fell in love on the first listen and now we’re bringing you some insights from the backcountry; so mix up that Mountain Dew with some vodka (they call that a Voo Dew in Makanda) and give this shit a spin.

Tracklist:

01. Spend It

Teenage Bottlerocket Another Way (Deluxe Edition) (2011)

CCCP 144

This is the stuff that started it all: Teenage Bottlerocket’s first rare 12″ now combined with their first two outta print 7″s. Classic fan faves. That’s right, Red Scare is bringing you 17 songs of early TBR all wrapped into one sweet package that is now re-mastered and suped-up for you to enjoy at maximum volume. If you’ve only been paying attention to this band since they’ve been doing huge shows with bands like Mighty Mighty Bosstones and NOFX, you’ll wanna hear these old school tunes too. It’s raw, punchy, and Ramonesy rock that got them first noticed in the pop-punk scene. You’ve seen how far they’ve come, now see and hear how all the magic started!

Elway Delusions (2011)

CCCP 146

This young four-piece from Colorado roamed the basements and punk houses of America for a couple years as the band 10-4 Eleanor, and after building quite a following among the sweaty/bearded segment of the underground, they opted for a new band name and a fresh start in 2011. Thus ushered in the era of Elway, and along with it comes their Red Scare debut, Delusions. It marks an ambitious step up for the band as they ditched their home recordings and enlisted audio guru Matt Allison at Atlas Studios (Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms, LTJ, Smoke or Fire, etc). Rest assured, this new one retains all the guts and grime that these guys are known for, but with more intricacy and nuance than you’d expect from your average “beardo” punk band. Delusions is thematically inspired by two things: our society’s regard for God and having to deal with maniacal loved ones; and these brainy rockers from the Rocky Mountains are sure to capture plenty of attention with this impressive beginning.

Tracklist:

01. 3/4 Eleanor
02. Passing Days
03. Spent So Long
04. Whispers in a Shot Glass
05. San Mateo
06. Song for Eric Solomon to Sing

Nothington More Than Obvious (2011)

CCCP 147

Nothington is a band that already stands out from their punk peers because they boast a tasteful tinge of American Rock and a Western aesthetic. Imagine a young, gruff Social Distortion with whiskey-fueled anthems about loneliness and triumph. It makes perfect sense then that the SF band would eventually try an acoustic, stripped-down approach to their rootsy punk rock, and More Than Obvious is exactly that. This 4-song 7″/6-song digital EP sheds a new light on what these guys are capable of and proves their songs and melodies are great with or without amplified guitars.

Tracklist:

01. Not Looking Down (Acoustic)
02. Tired Hearts
03. More Than Obvious (Acoustic)
04. In Flames (Acoustic)
05. End Of The Day (Acoustic)

The Holy Mess The Holy Mess (2011)

CCCP 148

Let’s put it this way, when we announced that Red Scare would be working with The Holy Mess we got the most positive response ever, and that hype has hardly died down as the band is already taking tour offers from bands like Dead To Me and The Flatliners. This new full length is the culmination of all their material thus far: their Dismount EP, their Benefit Sesh 7″, and two new tunes. This is gritty, anthemy, thrashy, and melodic punk rock. The 11 songs on this self-titled debut are just the first course in the delicious feast we expect from these Philadelphia wonderboys. Dig in.

CCCP 150

Yet another gem to come out of Chicago’s Atlas Studios (Alkaline Trio, The Menzingers, Dead To Me, etc) and long-time Copyright’s fans will notice more instrumentation, experimentation, and added bells and whistles on this latest offering. But the nerds and die-hards need not fear, these are still the same pop-punk heroes we’ve come to rely on for big choruses, bigger hooks, and keen lyrics. This album—quite possibly their best yet—is the one that you bring along with you to that hypothetical deserted island… North Sentinel Island that is! *GONG*

After releasing two albums with the esteemed folks from BYO Records, Nothington has branched out and joined the Red Scare family for their third and undoubtedly best full length. Proving again that two songwriters are always better than one, Red Scare really lucked out with this signing and we’re sure that listeners will agree. In 2009, Punknews.org (the genre’s biggest webzine) awarded “Album of the Year” to The Sidekicks. The band has since migrated from Cleveland to Columbus and made an even bigger migration with their ever-maturing sound on “Awkward Breeds”. Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds I’d Rather Die Than Live Forever (2012)

CCCP 157

Brendan Kelly is a blogger, father, TV host, and frontman of The Lawrence Arms; and this newest rock band was formed in the spirit of other artist collectives like Wu-Tang Clan and Crass. The ambitious 12-song debut is a brave collaboration of friends (musicians, graphic artists, studio nerds, and even a college film professor) and it offers diverse songs and ample instrumentation to set this album apart from the typical punker-goes-acoustic project. The Wandering Birds employ distorted guitars, vibraphone, lap steel, drum loops, piano, and more to deliver a true departure—both musically and thematically—on this dynamic record.

Tracklist:

Elway Hence My Optimism (2012)

CCCP 158

Elway released their debut full length, “Delusions”, in 2011 and went on to make quite a dent in the DIY punk scene. Armed with that breakout album, they toured their asses off, made lotsa friends, and won over loads of new fans. Something else must’ve happened in that time, because Elway’s songwriting has further improved, and that’s clearly evident on these four new tunes that make up “Hence My Optimism”. These are gutsy and efficient punk songs, sure to please the Elway faithful, but even more certain to garner them more new fans. Think The Lawrence Arms meets Propagandhi; it really is a promising step up for the band and a big favorite here at the Red Scare HQ.

Just a couple buddies and a guitar, taking trains from England to France to Germany and so on. One great adventurous endeavor deserves another though, so we got one new song from each of these gents and have assembled a pretty sweet tour 7” to go along with their European Vacation. Masked Intruder Masked Intruder (2012)

CCCP 162

Up until now, the only thing these four crooks were good at making was toilet wine in the joint, but we sent them into Atlas Studios to record with Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Less Than Jake, Smoking Popes, etc) and out came a pop-punk/power-pop masterpiece. They looted a vault of hooks, melodies, and many-layered harmonies for this debut full-length. Think Descendents meets Weezer in a dark alley! There’s already plenty of squealers and snitches talking about Masked Intruder, and these thugs have been invited to play all the cool festivals and will be touring with Teenage Bottlerocket in support of this release. It’s fun stuff and you’re gonna like it…or else.

The Holy Mess Cande Ru Las Degas (2012)

CCCP 163

The Holy Mess are a reckless and haphazard punk band that has been tearing up basements and house shows on the East Coast for a couple/few years now. In the early days, their kooky-looking frontman Stevo would get so trashed that he would berate the crowd with his goofy tales and end up in the fetal position on stage. Good times, no doubt. The band kept moving forward and their reputation for wild shows only grew; and being known around the punk scene for being a kickass band and all-around good dudes, they got tour offers from bands like Off With Their Heads, The Lawrence Arms, The Flatliners, Dead To Me, and A Wilhelm Scream. At some point they actually got their shit together to hone their live show, perfect their songwriting, and then headed into Atlas Studios to record their debut album with Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Less Than Jake, Smoking Popes, etc). And here we have it: Farty Degas (or whatever that dumb album title is); the latest offering from the most depraved batch of assholes to come swinging out of the super exciting Philly punk underground. Ten tracks so hot that they’ll blister your dick up to the point where you’ll look like the guys in The Holy Mess.

Sam Russo Storm (2012)

We saw Sam Russo’s greatness coming a mile away. Many bands touring over in the UK and Europe have witnessed first-hand his deep, rumbling ballads about destitution and triumph. Unlike the other guys going around singing their faux-heartfelt ditties, Sam is the real deal: part scumbag, part poet; and this plebeian bard has worked a million shitty jobs to back up his claim. CCCP 165

Led by the revered Johnny Peebucks on vocals and Matt Grayson’s ripping guitar, this second release from Bay Area’s Druglords combines the punk stylings of The Dwarves and Circle Jerks with more varied influences like Pogues and Pixies. Some wild rhythms, audacious lyrics, and crafty guitar leads make for an eclectic 13-song record of rowdy, singalong punk rock. Plus, we think there might be a Christmas song on here? Bing would be so proud!

Various Artists Red Scare Across America (2013)

CCCP 168

Three dynamic Red Scare bands will be hitting the road together in 2013 and we’re commemorating the first ever Red Scare Across America Tour with this 7″/EP that offers a trio of new, exclusive songs.

Tracklist:

01. Masked Intruder “No Excuses”
02. Elway “More Tree Metaphors”
03. Sam Russo “Storm”

Elway Leavetaking (2013)

CCCP 169

Much has happened since Elway’s first record: That dork John Elway tried suing them over his dumb last name; the even bigger dorks at MRR deemed them not punk enough for their magazine; and they got to play shows with cool bands like Against Me!, NOFX, Dead To Me, BTMI, etc. Not bad for a buncha cruelty-free, dumpster-divin’, god-hating dirtballs from the hippie haven that is Colorado.

Recorded at Atlas in Chicago (Menzingers, Alkaline Trio, Smoke or Fire), Leavetaking is the product of (no shit) 22 cases of Busch Light and some long, long nights. With a great debut and even greater EP in their wake, the table is set for Elway to step up and be the next shit-hot band on Red Scare, and we’re sure this is the album to do it.

01: The Great Divorce
02: Salton Sea
03: Prophetstown

Direct Hit! Brainless God (2013)

CCCP 171

Brainless God is a 12-song horror story brought to you by some not-so-brainless Milwaukee punks. Direct Hit! (henceforth known as The Four Horsemen of Pop Punk) have been tearing up basements and house gigs with their searing live show for a couple years now, and we knew it was time to include them in the Red Scare ranks. Turns out they had an album already written full of frantic hooks and songs that mock The Almighty? Ummm, yes please! Then we enlisted All-American Rejects guitarist and audio maven Mike Kennerty to ensure these 12 apocalyptic episodes were captured properly on tape. This album came out sounding so good you’d almost think Direct Hit! made a pact with Old Scratch himself. Does that mean we have to pay him royalties too?!?

Tracklist:

01. On & On
02. The World Is Ending (No One Cares)
03. Buried Alive
04. Getting What He Asked For

Nothington Lost Along The Way (2013)

CCCP 174

Red Scare and Nothington both came outta the SF punk scene at about the same time,
so it’s extra keen that we get to bring you their 16-song collection album, Lost Along The Way. This thing has it all: B-sides, rarities, some funny audio, a taste of their live show, and even a One Man Army cover! Nothington’s dueling vocals and gritty singalong melodies have taken these boys all over the world, and this release is essential for devoted fans of the band, but also makes an excellent gateway for the uninitiated.

The Slow Death & The Brokedowns Split EP (2013)

CCCP 175

Six new songs by a pair of sturdy Midwest punk outfits, The Slow Death from Minneapolis and The Brokedowns from Chicago. This is one of those splits that HAD to happen and this EP can have multiple uses: an alternate soundtrack to “Beer Fest”, a how-to manual on workplace conduct, theme music to your next Viking raid (we still have those in the Great Lakes States), and so on and so forth.

TRACKLIST:

The Brokedowns (Side A)

1. No Mastura
2. Hand Me Down Bones

Brendan Kelly & Sam Russo Split The Tip (2014)

CCCP 177

Here’s four new songs showcasing the bi-continental love affair between good friends and tour mates, Chicago’s Brendan Kelly and the UK’s Sam Russo. Sam’s offering picks up where his debut full length, Storm, left off: stirring ballads with a hint of Americana. In contrast to Sam’s full-band approach, Brendan’s two songs are sparsely tracked in the backroom of a bar, but bear his trademark wit and melodic rasp that have made him an alt-punk hero. No telling what is implied with the title of this EP, but given that Sam is from England, it seems unlikely that it’s a reference to leaving a gratuity…

Tracklist:

Sam Russo (Side A)

1. Small Town Shoes
2. Crayfish Tales

Brendan Kelly (Side B)

1. Frangelico Houston
2. Pigs

Cobra Skulls Live At The BBC (2014)

CCCP 178

Those scamps in Cobra Skulls have been threatening to call it quits, but we refuse to accept that. One of our all-time favorites among the Red Scare family, they did a few releases with Fat Wreck Chords and now they’ve come back to the dark side with four ripping live tracks. These songs were originally done with the British Broadcast Corporation, and now they can say they’ve done a “Live At The BBC” release alongside punk legends like The Damned, Motörhead, and Stiff Little Fingers. The production is AMAZING on this EP and we got some classic Beatles-esque artwork to round it out for ya.

Direct Hit! & Priceduifkes Split EP (2014)

CCCP 179

Milwaukee meets Belgium on this 4-song banger of an EP. Both places boast beautiful scenery and delicious beers, but they also share a couple wild punk rock bands. These two groups of idiots have toured together on both continents, so it only made sense to finally pair up for a 7″. Now you’re probably wondering how to pronounce the name of the Belgian band, but let’s be honest: are you really gonna learn Flemish at this stage of your life? Ik voel me ziek…

Tracklist:

The Copyrights Report (2014)

CCCP 180

After doing the No Knocks teaser 7″/EP with Fat Wreck Chords, The Copyrights have followed up with a 14-song full “Report” of Midwestern punk. Producer Mike Kennerty has outdone himself, and he has the boys sounding like a pack of Jumping Jacks going off in your ears. This explosive display was mastered by pop-punk sage, Mass Giorgini, who went as far as to say, “The Copyrights are one of the greatest pop-punk bands of all time and this is their very best record yet!” In 2014 you’ll find The Copys on big tours with The Lawrence Arms and 7 Seconds, and you can expect a lot more fireworks from these lads in the future.

The Brokedowns Life Is A Breeze (2014)

CCCP 181

This is The Brokedowns that all the nerds and drunks get down with: Jon brings the thunder, Kris brings the laughs, Eric will inevitably be shirtless, and Mustafa keeps a mean beat and rolls the spliffs. They take growly Midwest punk (à la D4, Lawrence Arms) and make it heavier, angular, and a little Hot Snakes-y. Laugh along with the song titles, sure, but these boys aren’t fucking around when it comes to social commentary. The Brokedowns know how to have a good time and they know how to write punchy punk jams, but what they do best is smack you on the ass with their words. Life Is A Breeze is an album for the party punks AND the smart punks.

Tracklist:

01. Joliet, The Maui Of The Midwest

Various Artists Red Scare Industries: 10 Years Of Your Dumb Bullshit (2014)

CCCP 182

As described in the liner notes, this compilation is, “like a mixtape that we made with love”. 17 new songs from all your favorite Red Scare bands, past and present. Red Scare Industries was a bedroom label that started in San Francisco back in 2004 with releases from The Falcon and Enemy You, but has went on to develop some of the best bands in punk rock. This collection provides a snapshot of a diverse roster of artists and we think you’ll enjoy it listen after listen. This record also comes with artwork detailing all the songs and a collage of pics and posters that document the past ten years.

Derek Grant Breakdown (2014)

CCCP 184

Is “Divorce Rock” a genre? I guess that’s how one would describe that band Everclear, hmmm… Well, this is way better than Everclear. Breakdown is like dark, new wave Americana. Imagine if Prince and Ryan Adams went on a road trip and confessed all their wrongdoing. It’d be cathartic and grim, but it’d also be awesome and weird. Most people know Derek Grant as the ripping drummer in Alkaline Trio, but he’s been making music for years and can sing and play any instrument like a virtuoso. It’s actually really unfair and annoying how good he is at making music. The release of this batch of songs is the final bit of closure on a rough, turbulent part of Derek’s life, and thankfully for us, the final product is much more upbeat and likable than the trials that inspired Breakdown.

Tracklist:

01. Holiday Breakdown
02. Waiting For The End Of The World

04. Turn And Walk Away
05. Lucy

Masked Intruder Incriminating Evidence: 2011 Demos (2015)

We thought these songs got the death penalty years ago, but Intrudermaniacs really love this early stuff and have been circulating this EP like it was contraband in the prison yard. These were the first songs ever properly tracked by Masked Intruder and we’re happy to share the loot with the rest of the world; just in time for a special Record Store Day release.

Tracklist:

Success Radio Recovery (2015)

CCCP 187

Seattle’s Success have been tearing up the West Coast for a little while and they finally got the attention of the grouchy old curmudgeons at Red Scare. Their not-so-major label debut is called, Radio Recovery, and it’s a half hour of singalong posi-punk, akin to bands like Broadway Calls or Red City Radio. This year is already looking good for Success: they’re booked at some big festivals and playing shows with Masked Intruder, they’ve been included on S1D’s Warped Tour comp, and were among the “Bands You Need To Know in 2015” as picked by Alternative Press. Success is inevitable!

Direct Hit! More Of The Same (Satanic Singles: 2010 – 2014) (2015)

CCCP 188

Direct Hit! is one of the most manic and unpredictable bands of this generation. Before their Red Scare opus, Brainless God, the boys did a bunch of split releases with all sortsa riff raff from the punk scene. You don’t wanna think about the kind of bands that DH! hangs out with anyhow; it’s like scene from a movie where The Gremlins walk into Mos Eisley’s Cantina. Yikes! Well, many of these songs are fan favorites but are hard to find, so we corralled the band and got them to re-record and compile these unruly jams on one record. And here we are, 11 old/new blasphemous punk blasts from Milwaukee’s sketchiest dudes. Amen!

Drakulas OWOWOWOWOWOWOW (2015)

CCCP 189

Members of Riverboat Gamblers and Rise Against team up for some ATX punk rock that reminds us of The Hives, The Dickies, Jay Reatard, and other weirdness. Old-school and garage-y, but with fresh-sounding melodies and lascivious lyrics. The Drax give you four songs on this debut 7″/EP and they’re all lathered up in Texas barbecue sauce. This is Space Punk from the Lone Star State, so watch your ass.

Elway Better Whenever (2015)

CCCP 190

Elway’s frontman Tim called to talk about this new record and told us, “I don’t want any hoopla or bullshit when this record comes out, we’d rather just let the songs speak for themselves.” Well, you’re in luck, Tim! Here at Red Scare we have neither the resources or the know-how to provide much hoopla, but he sure was right about the songs. Gone are the “party punk” tunes, and instead there’s more riffy, 90’s alt-rock like Sunny Day Real Estate or Seaweed. It still bears their trademark Rocky Mountain punk-twang and introspective tone, but there’s no doubt that Elway has matured and progressed on Better Whenever.

Tracklist:

01. Our Lady of the Thompson River
02. Albuquerque Low
03. Better Whenever
04. Lunatic Thirteens

Sam Russo Greyhound Dreams (2015)

CCCP 191

A lot has happened to our bearded-British-wizard-friend since we first plucked him from the farmland of Suffolk, England in 2013. He toured the U.S. as part of the Red Scare Across America tour and has played shows with Brendan Kelly, Frank Turner, Tim Barry, Lucero, etc. Sam Russo has been building a name for himself not only in the UK and Europe, but also with fans of Roots/Americana over here in the States. On Greyhound Dreams Sam has added guest musicians and instrumentation to make this second album his true masterwork. We have high expectations for this cheeky bard and he most definitely delivers with these 10 new, dynamic songs.

The All Brights …Are Wild For The Night! (2015)

CCCP 192

What IS “Yacht Punk”, you ask? Well, brah, it’s about babes, white privilege, tasty bevvies, and righteous waves. Hailing from Santa Barbara (where else?), these four under-employed beach bros are the answer to all those uptight political punk bands with their “message” and their “anarchy”. Rumor has it that members “Big Wave Dave” was in The Loved Ones and “Shreddin’ Sean” plays in Good Riddance, but that can’t possibly be true since everyone in The All Brights are way more tanned and toned than those aforementioned dorks. You heard of Rich Kids on LSD? Well, these are just rich kids. So grab your favorite ascot and a bottle of Veuve, and climb aboard before John Stamos tries to join this band and ruin them too.

The Lippies The Lippies EP (2015)

CCCP 193

This self-released EP came out only a couple months after the band formed and just in time for their third show. Raw yet melodic, these six songs proved that The Lippies were way ahead of the curve and poised to make their mark on the Midwest punk scene. A promising debut, to say the very least…

The Lippies S/T (2016)

CCCP 194

We found The Lippies in a Las Vegas bar and they immediately set the room on fire with their caustic words and buzzsaw guitars. Turns out it was the first time the band had ever left their hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. We saw a buncha kids barely old enough to drink playing old-school punk (think The Gits, Dead Kennedys, and The Avengers) and blending fresh melodies with an urgent message. This self-described, “feminist pop-punk” band has crazy potential, and they plan to bust ass on the road to share these songs, from basements to big stages. They’re already getting offers to play festivals and have tours booked with bands like The Falcon, Worriers, The Copyrights and many more to come!

The Falcon Gather Up The Chaps (2016)

CCCP 195

The Falcon is Brendan Kelly, Dan Andriano, Neil Hennessy, and Dave Hause. That’s some fiiiiine pedigree and plumage, but this rare bird only takes flight when the time is right. Their first album–2006’s Unicornography–is the all-time best-selling release on Red Scare and the world is eager for them to spread their wings once again. The good news is that the 12 new songs on Gather Up The Chaps are cheeky fun with a lot of singalongs and fist-pumpin’ good times. Remember the days when you used to have to hide your magazines and music from your parents? Well, raunchy times are here again, kids, because The Falcon has landed to deliver some truly dangerous rock ‘n’ roll. The Brokedowns & Direct Hit! Making A Midwesterner (2016)

CCCP 196

Who are the culprits responsible for these 5 songs? Line ’em up: we have Direct Hit! from Milwaukee and The Brokedowns from Chicagoland. Straight outta the Midwest, these bands are two of the most wild and irreverent groups in today’s punk scene and they’re out to bring a little slice of Midwest culture to the rest of the world. What culture, you ask? Well Francis, we’re talking about blocks of cheese, suspicious encased meats, smartass social commentary, brutal weather, and accursed sports teams. More than all that bullshit, these two partners in crime are all the evidence you need to prove that the Midwest has some of the best punk rock music around.

Arms Aloft What A Time To Be Barely Alive (2016)

CCCP 197

To better understand Arms Aloft you need to get to know their homeland, The Great Lakes. No no, not Chicago or Cleveland or Detroit, these punk weirdos are from THE NORTH. Half the band hails from Minneapolis and the other two lumberjacks are from Eau Claire, WI. Up in that neck of the woods the people wear large bricks of cheese upon their heads in a display of provincial unity. Ya sure, ya betcha. Well, these kids were destined for more than a life of ice-fishing and drinking Rhinelanders at the sawmill, so they started a band and caught people’s attention with their leftist message and raspy melodies. And on What A Time To Be Barely Alive they have 12 songs that take rootsy punk (like Billy Bragg and early Gaslight Anthem) and blend it with the personal politics of bands like The Clash and Dillinger Four. Plus, the cover art has a herd of swine busting out of a pigpen. Ain’t that some shit?

Good Friend Ride The Storm (2016)

CCCP 198

These three Irish lads originally come from around Belfast/Northern Ireland but they moved to Newcastle, England to get shitty jobs and form a band. The jobs did indeed turn out to be shitty, but the band turned out great! The youngsters hammered away at the songs and their rowdy music quickly drew friends and fans to the party. They sold out their first hometown show and figured it was time for their first proper release, and that’s when we got involved. Singer Adam has been a Red Scare comrade since he was a wee sprog (that’s Irish for young kid) and the first listen had us sold on the songs. Ride The Storm is 10 tracks of rock-influenced punk that remind us of bands like Alkaline Trio, The Flatliners, and Millencolin. There’s Gaelic folklore, drinking songs, and nautical themes throughout this debut album. We at Red Scare love discovering promising young bands from weird places and bringing them to the rest of the world, and we have another winner with Good Friend!

Some folks will see these South Americans playing punk rock and they’ll say, “Build a wall!” We saw the trio and said, “Let’s give ’em a record deal and get these badass hermanos on tour!” MakeWar is the first band we’ve ever worked with from NYC and their sound blends Gainesville/Chicago drinking anthems with Long Island emo-punk like Taking Back Sunday and Brand New. Yeah, it’s weird, but let’s see what your punk band sounds like after you’ve had to flee Venezuela, eh amigo?! Nothington Cobblestones (2016)

CCCP 200

Nothington’s Cobblestones is the focus track and single from their first new album in five years, “In The End”. The song originally premiered back in November of 2016 by the exquisite tastemakers at Vice/Noisey and it immediately reinvigorated their faithful fans. We knew this needed a physical release so punk DJs around the world could spin this hit; plus we’ve added an exclusive B-side of, “The Last Time” done acoustic. 2017 is an exciting year for these SF punk heroes, and this limited 7″ adds to their comeback campaign.

Nothington In The End (2017)

CCCP 201

The world has been waiting over five years for a new Nothington album and we’re excited to finally bring you 11 new songs from the San Francisco quartet. Nothing ever comes easy to this band, and that’s why it’s taken so long, but you can hear that struggle and restlessness in this new batch of songs. Dual singers Jay and Chris are back at it with a solidified lineup, and this time we employed Motor Studios (Dead To Me, Propagandhi, etc.) to capture In The End. This is an album full of triumph and tenacity, turmoil and turbulence. Just the way you like it. Even better yet is that now that the band has awakened from hibernation, they’re going to be active with tours and festival plays. Welcome back, gents.

Garrett Dale Two Ts EP (2017)

CCCP 202

Garrett Dale (of Red City Radio) has been flirting with the Red Scare family for a few years and we’re happy to finally bring him aboard. There was a lot of Tequila shots and backstage weed-smoking to get us to this point, and now we’re proud to bring you his solo debut: three songs of slow-roasted ditties from the Sooner State. It’s a little bit country, some alt-pop, and lots of soul. Think Tom Waits and Tim Barry sharin’ a spliff next to a prairie campfire. FYI, the opening track is actually called “2016 Was Horseshit”, but we’ll never win the CMAs with all that cussing. And if Garrett doesn’t win… well, WE’LL TAKE A HOT PISS ON THOSE SHITTY MOTHERFUCKERS AT THE CMAs. Wait, what?

The Lillingtons Project 313 (2017)

CCCP 203

Wow, it’s been eleven years since we put out the last release from The Lillingtons. Where’ve they been? Perhaps it was interdimensional reptoids from outer space? Was it another bout with Russian spies? Or maybe singer Kody was abducted by some other band and forced into side-project servitude? It’s anyone’s guess, really, but they’re back on planet Earth and we have four new songs of paranormal punk for ya. Will this creepy EP mark a return for these mysterious Wyoming weirdos… nobody knows!

Sincere Engineer Rhombithian (2017)

CCCP 204

Deanna Belos has been a fixture in the Chicago punk scene since she was in Junior High, attending shows, singing along, and raising hell in general. But she was more than just a face in the crowd, Deanna was a radiant friend to all, and at some point she picked up a guitar and made a different contribution the Chicago underground scene: her own music under the name Sincere Engineer. Over the last couple years we’ve encouraged her to keep writing songs and she surprised us all by assembling a great band and recording an impressive album. Her debut, Rhombithian, was Produced by Matt Jordan (You Blew It!, Dowsing, etc.) and pairs the sounds of Chicago punk and the youthful Midwest “emo revival” movement. No one is more excited about music than Sincere Engineer, and Deanna plans to play a lot of shows and bring her infectious energy to the rest of the planet in support of Rhombithian.

Guerilla Poubelle La Nausée (2017)

CCCP 205

Guerilla Poubelle have been an enduring force in Europe’s DIY underground scene for years. These Leftist Parisians have been doing good work in the punk scene and helping all our comrades with shows in France, so we figured it was time we give this band a listen, and SACRE BLEU are they good. They play huge shows and festivals back home, but now it’s time for the rest of the world to hear their hard-hitting singalong punk. It sounds like Hot Water Music, but with radical politics, French feminism, and their trademark themes of Romanticism/Anarchism/Existentialism. It’s a rowdy, rockin’ mix and it’s MUCH welcome during these dark days of Donald Trump.

Sicko In The Alternate Timeline (2019)

CCCP 206

The first “new” release from these Seattle legends in like 20 years! If there was any justice, Sicko woulda been just as popular as all those huge punk bands that emerged in the 1990’s. While much of the West Coast stuff that dominated the scene was macho and bedecked with wallet chains, Sicko was contemporaries with classy bands like MTX, Jawbreaker, and J-Church. They were nerds, and they were OUR nerds. Our champions. After four LPs, the band dissolved in 1998 and, true to form, the members went on to pursue tech careers and attend Oxford. But now we’ve put together a collection/anthology to remind young pop-punks how it’s done. 19 remastered songs, hand-picked by the band, and accompanied by some cool art and fun liner notes. A great collection of hits for the old fans -OR- the perfect introduction for new listeners!

Elway For The Sake Of The Bit (2018)

CCCP 209

The last Elway album came out without much fanfare, the band did a short tour with Propagandhi, and then they called it a year. Strangely, in spite of a lack of recognition from the important internet tastemakers, it went on to be their best-received effort to date. The band did LESS stuff… and got more popular? Yes, it even confused us omniscient music geniuses at Red Scare Industries. So now the Colorado quartet is back with another self-produced album and this time it takes aim at the critics, naysayers, and scenester shit-talkers. They’re calling the record For The Sake Of The Bit. Hmmm. It’s raw-sounding, defiant, a bit snarky, and the band is actually gonna get off their ass this time for some festivals and a tour with Dead To Me. With some new tunes and a little elbow grease, Elway might finally get acknowledged by the greats at Pitchfork and NPR. Haha, JK, those guys can still suck it.

Red City Radio SkyTigers (2018)

CCCP 210

SkyTigers is five new hits and 21 minutes of Heartland punk from Red City Radio with some balls-trippin’ art to boot, baby! Red Scare has a peculiar knack for plucking bands out of unlikely locations. We’ve developed acts from towns like Laramie, Enumclaw, Scranton, Carbondale, Haverhill, Reno, Eau Claire… the boonies! We may know squat about the music biz, but sure as shit can spot talent in a dive bar. Now we have yet another group of overachieving underdogs: straight outta Oklahoma, it’s Red City Radio. Their last full length was probably our favorite album of 2015, but when their major label subsidiary went outta business (high five!) after only a couple months, we reached out as fans to lend a hand to this great punk quartet. Their crowds have doubled in size since that last release, so we expect big things from these Okies with “SkyTigers”. To make damn sure, we enlisted producer by Mike Kennerty and mixer by Matt Allison, so you know this EP is destined to end up in the cosmos—which is probably where they found that two-headed beastie on the cover. Far fucking OUT, man!

The Brokedowns Sick Of Space (2018)

CCCP 211

These guys are one of the funniest bands around, but they ain’t playin’ when their songs take on issues like misguided nationalism or technology or Midwestern despair. We think they have the best bullshit detector in the scene. But this foursome is a little weirder, a little smarter, and a little heavier-sounding than your average punk band, and they have 13 new ones on Sick Of Space. Just look at the goddamn song titles and tell us you don’t wanna party with this LP?! Sick Of Space will be their third album on Red Scare and that’s usually when our bands achieve mainstream success, so get on board while they’re still cool!

The All Brights The White Album EP (2018)

CCCP 212

Winter, 2018: The Santa Barbara surf report called for some gnarly waves, but no one could predict the rough seas that were about to hit The All Brights. Most of the locals thought Mattsimum Waves was carried out to sea by an aggro riptide, but it turns out he just had a kid. Then there’s Pat L. Board, who got a “job opportunity” in the San Fernando Valley. He was, ahem, thrust deep into the biz and has some vivid tales to share. Big Wave Dave tried his hand at a solo career, but he lacked songs about tacos or tides, so he was doomed to fail. And lastly, in the midst of the band drama, drummer Shreddin’ Sean said good riddance to it all. Then something happened… Summer arrived and they put bros before their woes and put their toes on the nose to bring you six more bitchin’ tunes for “The White Album EP”. Banzai, brah!

Arms Aloft Sawdust City (2018)

CCCP 213

12 songs from our favorite Left-Wing hobos and re-issued in 2018 by Red Scare. From the original 2012 album description:

Arms Aloft spent a large chunk of 2011 and 2012 on the road. Touring both at home and in Europe. They also holed up in a small studio in Minneapolis to record their debut album, “Sawdust City”. This record finds Arms Aloft bringing more of their brand of the intelligent punk they debuted on the “Comfort at any Cost” EP, but expands on it further. The influence of Dillinger Four and The Clash is still there, but perhaps more obviously filtered through the range of everything from Sebadoh to Japanese rock group The Pillows to a Kurt Vonnegut book-on-tape that you’re likely to hear rattling from the two working speakers in the shitty red van they call home. The album is both musically and lyrically dense, but never pretends to be more than the punk rock record it is proud to be.

Tracklist:

01. Blues for Hiroshi Matsumoto
02. Irish Coffee
03. The Decline of Midwestern Civilization
04. DOUBLEDRANOPERCOCETNOICE

Tightwire Six Feet Deep (2018)

CCCP 214

One of the Dillinger Four dudes sent us music from a young band outta Minneapolis, and as usual, we groaned, rolled our eyes, and then grudgingly listened to the songs. WAIT A SEC. Holy shit… this band RIPS! (Super catchy and sounds like The Copyrights playing Dude Ranch). A new band with a great demo… is this a trap? We reached out right away and basically demanded that they join us at Red Scare. They’re called Tightwire, and they’re giving you 13 self-recorded blasts on this debut album entitled, Six Feet Deep, mixed by Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Dead To Me, The Menzingers). The two singers, Paul and Tane, offer the kinda dark/poppy jams you would expect from salty MPLS punks: love songs, drinking songs, angry songs, drinking songs, funny songs, drinking songs, etc. This should go down as one of the best pop-punk albums of the year, and you can expect lotsa tours from this Midwest trio as they already have shows booked with Dillinger Four and Off With Their Heads.

Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds Keep Walkin’ Pal (2018)

CCCP 215

The Wandering Birds is a project from Brendan Kelly (The Lawrence Arms, The Falcon, etc.) that involves an eclectic group of collaborators and thematically relies on depravity and sleazy swagger. Many people tell us that 2012’s I’d Rather Die Than Live Forever is the best release on Red Scare, but those people are idiots. (I mean, it’s good but COME ON.) After a lot of sold out shows and apparently a lot of time spent in dive bars and seedy hotels, Brendan has returned with a new batch of illicit goods.

Back with the Birds is Bren’s BFF and co-conspirator, filmmaker Nick Martin. They’ve also added two new partners in crime on these 10 godless hymns: Derek Grant of Alkaline Trio and Dan Tinkler from Atlas Studios. This latest LP is called Keep Walkin’ Pal, and we’re not sure if it’s Space Rock or Chiptune or what, but we know that it’s reliably dirty and real likeable. This is not some emo boy with a guitar or another “punk goes acoustic” outing, this is fresh American rock ‘n’ roll that will appeal to punks, drunks, and weirdos.

Tracklist:

01. Keep Walkin’ Pal
02. Shitty Margarita
03. Huggz
04. The Lies
05. Black Cat Boy

Swingin’ Utters / Nothington Bird Party (2018)

CCCP 216

The final release from Nothington and they’re lucky to pair up with fellow San Francisco punks, Swingin’ Utters. Two SF legends! And speaking of badass combos, on the Utters track we have a rowdy duet with Johnny Peebucks and Jack Dalrymple. Meanwhile, on the Nothington side, we have a bittersweet farewell that features Chris and Jay trading vocals one last time. Oh, but don’t get too emo about this sad sendoff ‘cuz both sides of this 7” are loud and fast. It’s Haight AND Ashbury. It’s Montana AND Rice. It’s chowder AND the sourdough bread bowl!

Side A: Swingin’ Utters “Shout It At Dem Culture”
Side B: Nothington “Covering My Tracks”

Billy Liar Some Legacy (2019)

CCCP 218

Every label needs a vegan Scotsman, so we went out and nabbed the very best: Billy Liar. The wee lad is known as a punk troubadour who has covered a LOT of ground in Europe and America with his acoustic guitar, but on Billy’s debut album, Some Legacy, our hero is backed by a loud rock band. Imagine a horde of rowdy punks led by a very, very small version of William Wallace with big songs about friendship, despair, tolerance, love, anxiety, and life in Edinburgh. It’s an 11-song uplifting battle cry that will rally all the clans!

Ramona Deals, Deals, Deals! (2019)

CCCP 219

Ramona formed in Seattle, kicked some ass out there, then moved to Philadelphia because—if you wanna know the truth—you can buy two drinks for $4 at most any bar. FOUR BUCKS. So then they get asked to play shows with bands like The Lawrence Arms, The Menzingers, etc. and people are really responding to their songs and their fun shows. Next we shipped ’em up to Boston to record with Jay Maas (State Champs, Seaway, Title Fight) and they crank out the coolest record of 2019: Deals, Deals, Deals!. See, it even sounds like a fun time. The band has a tour lined up with Teenage Bottlerocket and who knows what’s next… probably something with Chainsmokers, those guys are equally hot right now.

Broadway Calls S/T (2007)

CCCP 220

We’ve been crushin’ on Broadway Calls for over a decade and now we have the honor of bringing you their breakout self-titled album from 2007. Formerly on Adeline Records (apparently Green Day ran outta money?), these 14 tracks of bright and blissful punk have found a loving home with Red Scare. These are the songs that started it all. These are the songs that got them on tour with Alkaline Trio and Warped Tour. THESE ARE THE SONGS. We’re real excited to be able to make these hits available once again and even more excited to work with this Oregonian trio on new music in 2020.

Side 1: The first new music from The Copyrights since 2014 and a fun B-side to boot. It would seem that these pop-punk heroes are coming back to life to write new songs, and here’s the first of (hopefully) many more to come!

Side 2: The venerable Kepi Ghoulie has been on a thousand labels and our number finally came up. Poor guy. First song is a new Sci-Fi thriller and then he throws in a Copys cover just to show those boys how it’s done.

Various Artists Red Scare Industries: 15 Years of Tears and Beers (2019)

CCCP 222

Fifteen years?!? Now that Red Scare has overstayed its welcome for a decade and a half, we figure we better celebrate it… ‘cuz no one else will! We’ve got the label’s past, present, and future represented on this album: fifteen Red Scare artists with fifteen brand new, unreleased songs. Good ones too! The keen observer will recognize some Red Scare covers in the mix. That, along with some cool artwork/liner notes and a bonus poster with the vinyl make this a pretty sweet package. Needless to say, it requires a lot of support from listeners and the underground music community to last this long, and these fifteen hits are the best way we can repay y’all. Crank it or spank it, comrades.

The Reaganomics The Aging Punk (2019)

CCCP 223

The Reaganomics have been kicking around the Red Scare roster for about 10 years and they only show their faces when they feel there’s a need to mock Republicans and/or ladder-climbing scenester punks. And let’s be honest: there’s currently a need. These dudes are from Joliet, Illinois (hold your applause), and they don’t ever tour because they have weird jobs like… music teacher and stuff. Their rare live shows are half laughs and half a display of exorbitant musicianship. But we got them to head into Chicago to record with Dan Tinkler (The Falcon, Elway, etc.) and crank out 13 songs of hefty shreddin’. This new Nomix record is called The Aging Punk, and it sounds like if you took the comedic writing of The Hard Times and merged it with Propagandhi’s heavy thrash-punk. You probably will never see this foursome on tour, so the only chance you have to enjoy these wicked riffs is right here on this new album!

Guerilla Poubelle L’ennui (2020)

CCCP 224

Alright Pierre, let’s go over the facts: This is GP’s second LP with Red Scare; this album is even better; and Guerilla Poubelle is the biggest punk band in Paris, France. We’re off to a good start. What you need to know is that L’ennui is not only a strong outing for the Frenchman, this new one has all their talents on display. There’s catchy pop-punk, hardcore songs, and the rowdy anthems we’ve come to expect from Guerilla Poubelle. Plus the lyrical content on here is extra fiery. À La Flambé, if you will. Apparently the French have been real pissed lately? So if you wanna brush up on your Français and you’re into bands like Arms Aloft, RVIVR, Against Me!, and Strike Anywhere… this is the album for you.

Sam Russo Back To The Party (2020)

CCCP 225

Sam Russo has had offers from much bigger/better labels, but to our delight, he chose to stick with his old chums at Red Scare for album #3. And Back To The Party is a special one. This is a diverse-sounding record with a broad spectrum of emotions on display. You can hear the loyalty and the love, the fear and the hope, the desperation and the triumph. You can also hear Sam trying new things as he crafts 33 minutes of his best stuff yet. It’s a bold mix of styles that we haven’t yet heard from the British balladeer, and we know Sam’s devoted following are hungry for his first new LP in five years. When he’s not toiling away out in the farmland of East Anglia, he’ll be playing shows and festivals in Europe and America, so get ready for Sam’s party in 2020 and beyond…

Broadway Calls Meet Me On The Moon (2020)

CCCP 226

Meet Me On The Moon is the first single off Sad In The City, the upcoming full length from Broadway Calls. This next album is NO SHIT their best release ever, and this song is a sneak peak at what you have to look forward to. The band is doing a preemptive strike this Spring with a tour of the UK and EU, so we figured we should at least crank out a teaser 7″ for the occasion. The B-side features a stripped-down version of their fan fave, “Call it Off”. Get ready, ‘cuz here they come.

Cobra Skulls Eat Your Babies (2005 Recordings) (2020)

CCCP 227

Cobra Skulls have been inactive for a while, but one thing we’ve learned over the years is that people are still paying attention to their message. 15 years ago they self-released this first batch of songs, and we’ve recovered the music and picked the perfect time to share it: The Apocalypse of 2020! (awkward laughs) To their credit, they tried to warn us about this shit. This early material is from their formative years as a band who played house shows in Reno and hollered about American imperialism and our inevitable collapse. But fear not, the Cobras know how to have a good time while the world burns around them, and there’s some of their trademark mirth among the broken glass on here. In short, Eat Your Babies is ten Leftist punk songs that’ll make ya laugh, make ya mad, and make you wish you moved to Canada when you had the chance.

Broadway Calls Sad In The City (2020)

CCCP 228

We’ve been fans of Broadway Calls for a while now and after years of pestering they finally gave in and joined the team. Their exact words were, “It would take a catastrophic act of god that destroyed the music industry for us to consider working with Red Scare.” And what do ya know! Thank you, 2020. (Ironically, the record is about the impending civil war and apocalypse… so maybe this is all their doing?!) Then we sent ‘em down to the Bay Area to work with Scott Goodrich (Culture Abuse, Direct Hit!, etc.) and they emerged with the best 11 songs we’ve ever heard from this Oregon trio. Sad In The City is fast, it’s loud, and most of all it is catchy as hell. It’s their finest full length and it’ll likely go down as one of the top releases in our entire catalog.

Tracklist:

01. Never Take Us Alive
02. You Gotta Know
03. Sad In The City
04. Always On The Run
05. There’s a Glow
06. Take Me Down
07. Radiophobia
08. Slick New Truth
09. Meet Me On The Moon
10. Big Mouth
11. Went Dyin’
